Hurricane Force Wind Gusts Possible High Wind Warning

Our major storm is underway for this Sunday and we have already seen some heavy rains move through and the winds have been gusty at times from the south. The satellite radar shows more coming as low pressure develops off the North Carolina coast this afternoon and then strengthens rapidly as it moves northward. From later this afternoon into the first part of tonight wind will come into play as it will increase from southeast and gust to over 50 kts this evening and the first part of tonight. In fact along the immediate coast gusts to hurricane force (75 mph) are possible.
With regards to tidal flooding concerns at least from that standpoint coastal flooding does not look to be a big problem. The storm is moving fast and there is really only one high tide cycle to worry about. The moon phase is in the first quarter so tides are at the low end of the cycle.
Radars are loaded to the south so rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches are certainly doable. Once the storm moves to our north later this evening, the rains will begin to taper off. Winds will shift to the northwest and remain strong overnight into Monday morning. Weather conditions on Long Island will improve during the day Monday with sunshine and temperatures in the 50s.
