Snow is falling across Long Island as I write this.

A small weather disturbance has arrived quicker than expected, and temperatures are still cold enough for snow to reach the surface. As the day progresses, warmer air should take over, changing the precipitation to rain. Before then, a coating is likely.

Expect mostly cloudy skies overnight, with a few sprinkles possible. Temperatures will remain steady and then rise to near 50° on Friday. Most of the day will be dry, but after sundown rain will move in. I don’t expect the heaviest rain to arrive until after midnight, but once it starts it will continue right on through Saturday morning. Rainfall amounts of over an inch are possible. The afternoon and evening will bring a break for the rain, great news for outdoor activities, including the Jets game. Unfortunately, a second system will bring showers back on Sunday. On the whole this is not a great weekend, but if you time it out right could be salvageable. Or, just go shopping!

Next week brings dry but colder weather. Monday and especially Tuesday will be quite blustery, with the latter being the colder day. Colder air should more or less remain in place through next week and into Christmas. At that point, all the matters for snow is the timing of any weather systems. The long-range GFS does indeed have something nearby on Christmas Eve; noteworthy, but still far from a reality, as we are a week and a half away.  –Geoff
