Long Island Record High Today

Another Hot Day With Severe Weather Risk Sunday

Long Island saw a record high of 90 degrees at Islip MacArthur Airport early this afternoon before the sea breeze took hold. Even Westhampton which is closer to the ocean hit 90 degrees, East End highs were in the 70s to near 80 and Nassau County highs topped at 90 degrees in many locations. Now we move on to what will be a warm and humid night with mainly clear skies. Overnight lows will be in the low to mid 60s. The satellite shows a clear sky here and all around us and the radars are nice and quiet.

WEATHER RADAR

Sunday is going to be another very warm to borderline hot humid day with sunshine most of the day. Highs will be in the range of 85 to near 90 degrees with temperatures cooler at the shore and over the East End. The atmosphere is going to become somewhat unstable, the dew points will be juiced up in the mid 60s again, and a cold front will be approaching from the northwest. The front’s timing and the position of the upper trough suggest that the best chances for severe weather will be in New England.

However we could see renegade thunderstorms form ahead of the cold front and as a result the Storm Prediction center has gone to a marginal risk for severe weather Sunday for the possibility of some isolated severe thunderstorms over Long Island and surrounding areas. The thunderstorms with the cold front will likely weaken when the front passes Sunday night. Monday brings some sunshine cooler and less humid weather with highs in the lower 70s. Tuesday we see sunshine and clouds with highs in the upper 60s. Long range the next chance for widespread shower and thunderstorm activity will be Friday but things are shaping up nice for the Memorial Day holiday weekend from this vantage point.
