Long Island Winter Weather Advisory Overnight Into Friday Icy Mix Likely From Time To Time

3 to 6 fresh inches of snow cover fell over Long Island today and now that the first wave of low pressure has moved away to the east we are left in a rather moist air mass. Usually we clear out behind lows moving out but this was a weak wave and there are other weak waves that will be moving to our south and east overnight and on Friday. We just have to wait for the last and strongest one to move out later  Friday and bring drier air in for the weekend.

Until that happens, Winter Weather Advisory will continue right into Friday. We have seen some sleet and freezing rain during the late afternoon and evening hours. This has created a slick glaze on top of the snow. Temperatures as the map shows above are mostly in the 20s which means that anything that falls freezes on surfaces.

From now on we watch the radars. You can see on the regional radars that there are areas of snow that are developing. These bands are light. What you can’t see is the freezing drizzle or light freezing rain which is underneath the radar beam.  This will occur in on and off fashion overnight and Friday. We will watch to see if any one wave gets strong enough to produce a period of steady precipitation.

F5 WEATHER RADARS

Temperatures will hold in the 20s to near 30 tonight and probably hold in the upper 20s and lower 30s on Friday. Skies should clear Friday night and Saturday will be sunny but cold with highs reaching the lower 30s. Sunday will also sunny and cold with again reaching the lower 30s. There are no issues with precipitation this weekend.

Monday will bring a fast moving cold front with some precipitation with that. If it comes in fast enough Monday morning it could start off as snow especially inland but more than likely most areas will just see some rain showers as temperatures push up into the 40s. The stormy winter pattern has broken down and much of next week will be quiet with moderation temperatures and no snow threats.
