Severe Weather Developing South of Long Island This Evening

Anytime you have severe weather risk you simply need to wait to let the radars show you where storms are going to develop. The main area of greatest instability has set up west and south of Long Island which is why the severe thunderstorm watch stopped at NYC. Northern New Jersey is getting hammered by severe thunderstorms in Passaic and Bergen Counties. Long Island on the other hand is sitting in threatening clouds and some showers as it lies in between the two zones of thunderstorms on the radar.

We will have to watch the cells in Northern New Jersey as they move eastward. We have already seen a tornado and a flash flood warning produced from this. At some point it will peak and then begin to weaken. So far Long Island seems to be escaping the worst of it.

Tuesday Long Island will lie outside of the zone of risk as a warm front temporarily stalls to the southwest of the island. This keeps Long Island in an onshore flow with clouds and some sun. Temperatures will top in the mid 70s to near 80. The humidity will be high and there is the chance for a shower or thunderstorm but severe weather is unlikely with an all day wind off the ocean. Severe weather risk returns on Wednesday with the wind from the southwest rather than south. Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s with high humidity and sunshine until late in the day when thunderstorms could develop. Thursday and Friday will be hot humid days with highs in the upper 80s to near 90 away from the ocean. Thursday looks thunderstorm free but Friday could see another round of late day thunderstorms.
