Spring On Long Island Always A Problem
They don’t ring a bell when seasons change and spring is probably the one season where the bell is usually the most silent. Volatility is usually highs particularly in the first month of the season and indeed that is the case this week. We are starting out the new season with a beautiful day of sunshine and temperatures that should get back close to average this afternoon which is low to mid 50s for highs. We have a cold front approaching from the Great Lakes that doesn’t have much with it other than clouds and a passing shower. We will see those move through overnight and early Tuesday. You can see those clouds swinging eastward on the satellite loop below.
On Tuesday we should hit the 50s again for highs but a shot of cold air is coming for Wednesday and Thursday. Both those days temperatures will struggle in the upper 30s and low 40s but we will have dry weather and sunshine both days.
After Thursday that cold high moves out to our south and a warmup begins. Saturday looks to be the warmest day and depending on how much sunshine we get, 70 degrees is a distinct possibility in many locations as long as you are away from the ocean. As always with spring wind direction and cloud cover will be key to how warm it gets. As for storms there are none of the horizon for this week. Long Island weather in the spring is always difficult to forecast thanks to the very cold ocean. Any wind off the water means that places to the west can warm to the 70s while we sit in the much colder 40s and 50s. Wind direction on Long Island in the spring can create forecast problems of many kinds. Let’s hope for a west wind on Saturday so that at least we reach the 60s.
