Heavy Rains Thunderstorms Long Island July 4th Holiday Weekend Forecast
Long Island has gotten its share of thunderstorms and heavy rains this afternoon and this evening we see lots of clouds on the satellite running from New England into the Mid Atlantic states. This is due to a slow moving cold front and an strong upper trough that will be moving very slowly eastward for the next couple of days. A wave developing on the cold front will move northeast tonight so we will see more downpours moving through until the low passes to the northeast early Friday morning.
SATELLITE
The regional and local radars are loaded with showers and thunderstorms. Severe weather has been to the south in New Jersey so the main threat here continues to be heavy rain and the potential for localized flooding. 2 to 3 inches total rainfall are possible before this all starts to wind down. Temperatures are in the low 70s this evening and they will settle in the 60s tonight.
WEATHER RADAR
The first wave will move away early Friday morning pushing the front to the east. A second wave will develop offshore. This will keep us in clouds Friday along with occasional showers and temperatures in the 70s. Once that wave moves away late Friday night we should begin to see some very slow improvement over the weekend.
The issue with Saturday is that we still have the upper trough over the Northeast and that will mean clouds and the chance for showers. Saturday will be a cool day with highs just in the upper 60s and lower 70s. The trough will move offshore Saturday night and that brings solid improvement for Sunday.
Sunday looks like a very good day with sunshine, low humidity. some passing clouds, and highs in the mid to upper 70s. It will start to turn very warm and more humid Monday with highs back into the 80s. Tuesday brings the heat and humidity back in full force with sunshine and highs in the upper 80s and lower 90s. Enjoy the 4th of July holiday weekend.
