Long Island Fights Marine Layer But Warm Humid Air Wins Out Eventually

Sunshine is breaking through the clouds this afternoon and the daytime heating will take hold. Temperatures will rise into the 80s away from the ocean. Then our attention turns to the west as we watch for the development of any thunderstorms. Yesterday the marine layer kept us protected from thunderstorm activity. However that layer is disappearing this afternoon. The Storm Prediction Center has Long Island in a marginal risk for severe weather. Since more often than not, thunderstorms evade Long Island by going north or south or get destroyed on their approach, the best way to handle it is watch the radars late today.

The next 2 days we think that other than an isolated pop up thunderstorm, there won’t be any risks here. Overnight some low clouds and fog will develop only to burn off in the morning. It will just be July heat and humidity for both Thursday and Friday. Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s. Temperatures will be cooler along the shore.

The weekend looks unsettled as does the start of next week. A cold front will approach on Saturday and while that increases the chance for late day thunderstorms, the latest GFS splits the line of storms in half and Long Island misses them. I’m not sure this is correct or not. Otherwise it will be warm and humid Saturday with highs in the mid to upper 80s away from the ocean. There will be some sun but there will also be clouds around. The same holds for Sunday as the front stalls. Highs will be in the low to mid 80s with the chance for showers or downpours or perhaps a thunderstorm. I think much of the time Saturday and at least part of the time Sunday will be rain free. Early next week once the front progresses east we could get a bit of a humidity break.
