Long Island Heat Humidity Pop Up Storms Rip Current Risk
Saturday wound up being a day stuck with clouds and while there are some clouds on the satellite early on, sunshine should break through nicely and that will bring temperatures up to the middle 80s this afternoon in the warmest inland areas and cooler 70s to near 80 at the beaches.
We will leave in the slight chance for a pop up shower or thunderstorm but if it happens it should be short lived and mostly isolated. High pressure offshore is pumping up hot humid air on a southwest wind and that will continue right into the middle of this week. If you are headed for the South Shore beaches today be advised that there is a HIGH RISK for rip currents this afternoon and evening as a southwest swell develops over the coastal waters.

On to Monday where the southwest wind will have little impact in bringing cooler ocean air inland. We are at the time of year as water temperatures rise toward 70 degrees that the ocean has less and less of an impact except right at the beaches. Look for highs to reach at least the lower 90s inland and 70s to near 80 right along the shore. The East End should see their first long stretch of 80 degree plus highs especially away from the beaches.
Tuesday and Wednesday should be repeat performances of Monday. While there is the chance for a pop up shower or thunderstorm Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday offers a better chance for late day thunderstorms as an upper trough moves through.
The end of the week becomes a little muddled with the GFS model painting a much wetter picture for the end of the week and possibly for part of the 4th of July holiday weekend. Other models show a different scenario with hot humid conditions through Friday. A cold front passes with thunderstorms and potential severe weather followed by a less humid and nice holiday weekend. We will address the long range in a post later today.
