Long Island Hot Humid Severe Weather Risk Wednesday

Low Humidity Sunshine Late Week

It is a hazy day and you can thank the wildfires in Northwest Canada for this as well as the northwest flow in the upper atmosphere. It has added a milky haze to the sky filtering the sunshine and cutting the daytime heating down somewhat. In spite of this we have a very warm and humid afternoon on Long Island. Temperatures will reach the mid to upper 80s for highs. We do not expect any pop up showers or thunderstorms to show up today. The air quality today is quite poor thanks to that smoky haze so between that, the heat and the high humidity, this is not a day to run a marathon. A warm humid night is forecast tonight with most lows in the low to mid 70s.

A cold front will be approaching Wednesday and we will have hazy sun very warm and humid conditions ahead of it. Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s with temperatures a little cooler at the shore. The front is coming down from the north and we also have an upper trough with it that is somewhat sharp. This will result in scattered thunderstorms Wednesday evening and the Storm Prediction Center has us in a marginal risk for severe weather.

Short range models have left much to be desired regarding thunderstorm development whether it is overdone or underdone. The direction that the upper trough and front are coming front favors thunderstorms more along the coast rather than inland. Think back to two weeks ago when Long Island had a round of strong to severe thunderstorms. This set up is similar in that respect.

Once the front moves offshore some delightfully dry air moves in for Thursday and lasts probably through Saturday. We should see sunshine Thursday and Friday with highs in a rage of 80 to 85 with comfortable conditions. Saturday look for sun and high clouds with highs into the 80s. A warm front stands to bring showers and thunderstorms Saturday night into Sunday morning. Once that passes it is back to very warm and humid conditions Sunday with partly sunny skies. Some scattered thunderstorms are possible late in the day with highs in the mid to upper 80s.
