Long Island Humid South Wind Holds Temperatures Back Scattered Storms Around
It was an interesting day thanks to the south wind but it took awhile for it to have impact in areas north of the Long Island Expressway. Sunshine warmed things up fast but the ocean wind took temperatures down along the southern half of Long Island from the 80s back into the 70s.
North Shore highs made it to the upper 80s to near 90 degrees before the south wind took hold and cooled it off a bit during the afternoon. In the meantime we are seeing some scattered showers and a couple of thunderstorms as tropical moisture from a disturbance to the west took advantage of an increasingly unstable atmosphere. A downpour is possible this evening before these storms weaken. Then it is a warm steamy night ahead with lows in the upper 60s and lower 70s.

Tuesday on Long Island the wind will be more southwest which cuts off the ocean flow to an extent but we will also have more clouds around and that should keep temperatures will reach the low and middle 80s with 70s along the shore and East End. There will be some scattered late day and evening thunderstorms. Wednesday will be a very warm and humid day with the chance for late thunderstorms as a backdoor front approaches. Highs will be in the 80s.
Thursday morning at sunrise brings a solar eclipse and it will make for a spectacular view IF we can get at least some partial clearing of skies early Thursday morning. Today’s late afternoon NAM model run tries to push the front a little further south by a handful of miles. It isn’t much but it may be enough to give us enough breaks in the cloud cover. There will be less clouds as you go north and east into Southern New England so there is hope here that for Long Island at least we could get to see this annular eclipse (not annual). Annular means it is a partial eclipse which will leave the sun in a brilliant crescent shape. Fingers are crossed.
Thursday may turn out to be a dry day with lower humidity and a mix of sun and clouds. Highs will be in the upper 70s to lower 80s. The front is going to buckle giving us a southeast flow Friday. Low pressure will bring some rain Friday into Friday evening. Temperatures will settle in the 60s. The weekend is looking okay with improvement on Saturday with some sun and highs in the 70s. Sunday will bring a cold front with a strong upper trough so we could see thunderstorms before the end of the day and they might be on the strong side. We will be looking at this more carefully over the next few days. In the meantime brave the humid conditions and keep your fingers crossed regarding Thursday morning.
