Long Island Seeing A Nice Start to the Weekend Weather Changes Next Week
Long Island started off the weekend with some cool temperatures this morning as many areas in Suffolk County particularly in the pine barren areas bottomed in the 40s this morning. However the cool high from the north is now to the south of us today and that means a west wind and sunshine taking highs into the low and middle 70s. There are no weather issues today. The satellite shows very little as far as cloud cover is concerned and the radars are nice and quiet and will stay that way through Sunday evening.

The showers on the regional radar in Northeastern NY and Northern New England tell us where the frontal boundary lies and it is no where close. Skies will be clear tonight with lows in the upper 40s again in the cool spots and the 50s everywhere else. Sunday look for sunshine and some arriving clouds later in the day but it will be a warm day with highs reaching the mid to upper 70s. An 80 degree high in Northern Nassau and Northwest Suffolk county is not out of the question. If you are heading for the shore either today or Sunday be advised that there are rip current risks and rough surf issues due to Hurricane Sam passing well to the east southeast of Long Island over the weekend.
Monday brings the chance for showers as a cold front finally makes its move from the Great Lakes and Plains. It has been stuck there as a trough in the East has been stuck, waiting for Hurricane Sam to move up and out and breaking up the log jam. Monday will see clouds around though there could be some breaks of sun. There will also be some showers around though by no means will be an all day affair. Highs will still be in the warm 70s until the front passes.
Tuesday through Friday will be all about high pressure to the north in New England and Eastern Canada and an onshore flow that lasts for the remainder of the week and even into next weekend. Everything comes to a grinding halt again as a ridge of high pressure aloft builds into the Eastern US and goes nowhere. In the spring a pattern like this would be a gloom and doom disaster thanks to the cold ocean but we are at the other end now with the ocean relatively warm. While the onshore flow will likely produce clouds each day and also some occasional shower issues or drizzle, there will be dry stretches as well. If enough of the high to the north builds southward we could see some sun from time to time as well particularly during the second half of the week. Temperatures will be in the upper 60s and lower 70s for highs Tuesday through Friday with nighttime lows in the upper 50s and lower 60s. There are no major issues to concern ourselves with at the moment. Late week or over the weekend there are model hints of tropical cyclone development in the Northwest Caribbean to the Bahamas which would be something we might need to watch but for now nothing is imminent or guaranteed so we can just put it in cruise control into next week.
