Long Island Sees First 80s of the Spring, Wind Machine Back On Friday

Here we are in the last days of April and Long Island has a set up that should take highs above 80 this afternoon in areas away from the South Shore coast and East End. The one issue today are some high clouds that will filter the sunshine from time to time but at some point we should break out wide open with sun for at least a few hours and that should be enough to take temperatures above 80 this afternoon.

Along the immediate shore you are fighting a 47-50 degree ocean and you aren’t going to wind that battle at the beaches especially during the afternoon. Temperatures at the beaches probably won’t be much above 60. Inland though north of Sunrise and west of Riverhead we should see temperatures over 80 degrees this afternoon. The warmest numbers will be in Northern Nassau and Northwest Suffolk County.

There is a cold front to the north that moves through tonight and stalls right on top of us for Thursday. We will see temperatures at least 10 degrees cooler Thursday with highs in the upper 60s and lower 70s. We will also have clouds around and the risk for passing showers or a thunderstorm.

While there will be severe weather risk to the west of Long Island I don’t believe the risk areas reach the coast. The bigger issue will be what happens when that low moves into New England and strengthens. That will bring in drier air on Friday with early clouds followed by developing sunshine but the wind machine will be turned on one last time for the month of April (since it is the last day of April).

We could reach wind advisory criteria Friday and Friday night with gusts of 40 mph or higher possible. Clouds will give way to sunshine Friday with highs in the upper 60s and lower 70s and then drop into the upper 30s and lower 40s Saturday morning. Winds ease Saturday with some sunshine and highs reaching into the 60s. Sunday looks good from this vantage point with some sunshine and highs reaching 70 or better at least away from the ocean.
