Long Island Sees Rain Thunderstorms Tonight Weather
Lingering Clouds Showers Friday
Slow moving fronts are always torture for a forecaster as you basically are sitting and waiting for it to arrive. It seems like forever and we did manage to stay mostly rain free during the day other than some passing showers that came in from off the ocean. No doubt it has been a very warm humid day with a gusty south wind and that will continue tonight.
None of the short range models are handling the band of downpours and thunderstorms well but the HRRR has the general idea here. The stronger storms look to impact Nassau County more than Suffolk which is why the Flash Flood Watch is up for Nassau but not Suffolk (not that it stops magically at the county line but you have to draw the line somewhere).
SATELLITE
The eastward progress continues to be very slow on the radar and other than some passing showers coming in from off the ocean, Long Island should escape the heavy rains and thunderstorms for the evening rush hour and they should come in after it is done (after 7-8pm). Rainfall amounts could reach an inch or maybe 2 in some spots in Nassau but will likely be under an inch for most of Suffolk.
WEATHER RADAR
The issue for Friday is that the front will take its sweet time passing through. Some showers will still be lingering around in the morning but we should begin to see slow improvement Friday afternoon from west to east but it will definitely take all afternoon and probably the evening to get the clouds out of the way. Temperatures Friday will settle in the 60s. Saturday will be a day where the western half of Long Island should be partly sunny but as you head east and closer to the front there will likely be clouds and even a few showers can’t be ruled out over the Twin Forks. Saturday highs will be in a range of 70 to 75. Sunday looks good with sunshine and highs will be in the low to middle 70s.
