Long Island Spring And The South Wind Means Much Cooler Than Everyone Else

Yesterday we saw sunshine take highs into the 60s on Long Island and there was dancing in the streets. Today we will have sunshine but today is also one of many examples on why springtime on Long Island is a not so nice time of year. The cold ocean interacts with the faster warming land and the result is an ocean wind.

Today however it is not just an ocean wind but it is a widespread southeast flow from off the ocean. High pressure is to the northeast and we have a low well to the west so the flow is wholesale southeast. That means highs on Long Island will be just in the low to mid 40s. If you are headed for a a walk near the shore, bring a jacket because it will be cold. Temperatures along the coast and over the East End will only be in the 40s.

Satellite and radars remain quiet. We have mostly cloud free conditions though some occasional clouds could pop up today. Tonight we may see some low clouds and a little patchy fog with temperatures that will hold in the 40s.

Thursday we get a better wind direction from the south southwest. It still has an ocean component to it but over a shorter distance. This should help to bring highs back up into the 60s away from the ocean and over Western Long Island while the East End will be in the 50s. There will still be plenty of sun however. NYC highs will probably reach 70 before any sea breeze takes hold.

Friday brings a cold front with perhaps a passing early brief shower. Otherwise we will see sunshine return with temperatures in the 60s and a west wind. Colder air follows for the weekend with highs in the 40s for both Saturday and Sunday. Both days will feature sunshine. No widespread rain (other than a passing shower early Friday) is forecast into Monday.
