Long Island Winter Weather Advisory 2 to 3 Inches Tonight into Tuesday Morning, Cold Air Follows

Winter Weather Advisories are up for all of Long Island tonight as a frontal boundary to the south and a developing area of low pressure on the front brings snow northward. Snow should being between 7 and 10 pm and last into daybreak. It will be a steady snow all night but not a heavy one with blinding visibility. 2 to 3 inches of accumulation seems to be a good bet by the time folks hit the roads Tuesday morning. The bulk of the accumulating snow falls overnight. During the day Tuesday with temperatures close to the freezing mark, we will probably see sleet or some rain. This should start to taper off midday or early afternoon.

Clouds have increased and the radars are showing snow advancing northward along a frontal boundary to the south and a developing low off the coast of North Carolina. The low itself isn;t going to develop much so we don’t expect any surprises tonight on the upside. Temperatures will be in the 20s overnight and then toward morning they will creep up to near the freezing mark.

Tuesday morning we may go to sleet or rain for a short time as temperatures hover near the freezing mark. By early afternoon as the NAM model shows, precipitation comes ot an end and then it turns colder behind a the developing low to the northeast. Tuesday night will be very cold with lows in the mid to upper teens so everything will ice up. Wednesday will be cold with some sunshine but highs will only be in the upper 20s. Thursday looks to be dry with some sunshine. Highs will be in the upper 20s to some lower 30s.

Friday we see another low that will develop offshore and arctic air that will be poised to come in behind it. The low looks far enough offshore not to be a big issue but we could see another round of snow with the potential for several inches. Temperatures Friday will be in the 20s and then as arctic air comes in on the backside., Friday night into Saturday morning, temperatures will drop to the low teens. Saturday will be very cold with highs just back into the 20s with some sunshine. This will be the last of the cold as temperatures moderate Sunday and we go to a warmer more relaxed pattern next week.
