Rip Currents Friday Long Island
Rip Currents Friday Long Island
Hot Friday & Saturday in the 90s
If you are headed for the Long Island South Shore beaches Friday beware the Rip Currents. The National Weather Service is warning beach goers that there is a high risk of rip currents developing especially during Friday afternoon and evening.
...HIGH RISK FOR RIP CURRENT DEVELOPMENT FRIDAY... NYZ075-080-081-178-179-221000- /O.NEW.KOKX.RP.S.0003.160722T1400Z-160723T0100Z/ KINGS (BROOKLYN)-SOUTHWESTERN SUFFOLK-SOUTHEASTERN SUFFOLK- SOUTHERN QUEENS-SOUTHERN NASSAU- 442 PM EDT THU JUL 21 2016 ...HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY EVENING... THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN UPTON HAS ISSUED A HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY EVENING. * LOCATIONS...ATLANTIC OCEAN BEACHES OF LONG ISLAND AND NEW YORK CITY. * RIP CURRENT RISK...HIGH. * SURF HEIGHT...2 TO 3 FT IN THE MORNING...BUILDING TO 3 TO 4 FT. * LIGHTNING RISK...LOW. IMPLIES THAT THERE IS LITTLE CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS. * TIMING...RIP CURRENT RISK INCREASING TO HIGH FRIDAY MORNING...AND CONTINUING TO BE HIGH THROUGH FRIDAY EVENING. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... RIP CURRENTS ARE POWERFUL CHANNELS OF WATER FLOWING QUICKLY AWAY FROM SHORE...WHICH OCCUR MOST OFTEN AT LOW SPOTS OR BREAKS IN THE SANDBAR AND IN THE VICINITY OF STRUCTURES SUCH AS GROINS... JETTIES AND PIERS. TALK TO LIFEGUARDS AND BEACH OFFICIALS TO LEARN ABOUT ANY SURF HAZARDS AND HEED THEIR ADVICE. PAY ATTENTION TO FLAGS AND POSTED SIGNS AND SWIM IN LIFE GUARDED AREAS. IF YOU BECOME CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT...YELL FOR HELP. REMAIN CALM...DO NOT EXHAUST YOURSELF AND STAY AFLOAT WHILE WAITING FOR HELP. IF YOU HAVE TO SWIM OUT OF A RIP CURRENT...SWIM PARALLEL TO SHORE. ONCE YOU ARE AWAY FROM THE FORCE OF THE RIP CURRENT... BEGIN TO SWIM BACK TOWARD THE BEACH. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SWIM DIRECTLY AGAINST A RIP CURRENT AS YOU WILL TIRE QUICKLY.
With regards to the weather Friday will be a hot day and definitely a beach day with sunshine into the afternoon before a cold front approaches. The question is whether there will be some showers and thunderstorms Friday evening.
The NAM model is showing a broken line of thunderstorms moving through between 11pm and Midnight Friday night. It does not show much in the late afternoon or evening. Frankly the dynamics are not impressive though they may favor stronger thunderstorms (if they happen) over Central & Eastern Long Island and less to the west. The Storm Prediction Center has Long Island at a marginal risk for severe weather Friday evening.
Saturday will be the hottest day this weekend and with a northwest wind there will be no sea breeze so temperatures will be in the 90s even at the beaches. The sea breeze will probably not be a factor so the beaches will be rather brutal unless you cool off in the ocean.
