Saint Patrick Smiling Sunshine Weekend Cold Last Days of Winter

We are looking ahead to a rain free weekend with Saint Patrick’s Day festivities going on for both days. Before getting into the weekend outlook, we do have the down side of spring playing out late this afternoon and evening. Take a look at the 5pm temperatures on Long Island and you will notice that much of the island is sitting in the 50s while areas just to the west like in New York City and Northern New Jersey we have temperatures in the upper 60s to mid 70s. You can thank the almost always present south wind bringing in cool marine air off the 40 degree ocean. Such is life here for the next 3 months. Unless it is a strong enough west or northwest wind, you can only dream about the warm temperatures that always like just a handful of miles away.

We do have a cold front that is coming through Long Island tonight that will change the wind direction to the northwest. Clouds are on the satellite loop and the regional radar does show some scattered showers developing nearby so these will play through this evening. However there is nothing too problematic here.

Out local radar out of Brookhaven is showing some scattered showers developing so you might see some scattered showers if you are out and about this evening. However this will not be widespread nor will it last too long. By 9pm or so they should be mostly done and weather conditions will improve overnight with most lows bottoming in the lower 40s.

Colder air on gusty northwest winds will be the story for Saturday though the temperature changes won’t be nearly as dramatic as areas to the west. We will be about 10 degrees lower than today with sunshine and a gusty breezy. High should settle in the lower 50s in most places. By Sunday morning we will be down in the upper 20s to near 30. Sunday will be chilly with sunshine all day but highs will be just barely back into the 40s.

Early Monday morning a weak low will be passing by to our south. There could be a few rain or snow showers Monday morning around daybreak but they should be gone by midday. Weather conditions will improve Monday afternoon with leftover clouds and some sun with highs just in the lower 40s. Tuesday and Wednesday look nice and sunny with highs in the 40s. The next chance for showers after whatever we get Monday morning will come on Thursday.
