Thunderstorms Bands Saturday Night Downpours Later Sunday
Before we get to what to expect for the weekend, let us look at what is going on tonight. We have rather pleasant conditions across Long Island with mainly clear skies and a nice light ocean breeze. Temperatures are settling into the lower 70s. This looks like another night of clear skies, calm conditions, and temperatures that will settle in the 60s. The satellite loop shows most of the clouds to the south at least for now and the regional radar for our purposes is nice and quiet.
EASTERN SATELLITE LOOP
Saturday should actually start off with some sunshine but clouds will be rolling in from the southeast as the flow off the ocean begins to strengthen and moisture begins to push northwestward. To the south low pressure makes its way out of coastal North Carolina and straddles off the Virginia Delaware Coast into Saturday evening. If things time out rain should hold off until very late in the afternoon or evening. Saturday’s temperatures will be just into the 70s thanks to the flow from off the ocean and increasing cloud cover.
NAM MODEL MIDNIGHT SUNDAY JULY 22, 2018
Spiral bands of downpours will be sweeping around low pressure in Eastern Pennsylvania. In those bands are likely to be some thunderstorms and it is from this that the Storm Prediction Center has a marginal risk for severe weather. We have seen cases like this produce tornadoes and waterspouts so I would not at all be surprised if this happens. With the low tracking to the west once these bands go by we should dry out. The southerly flow however continues Sunday around the strong upper air storm to the west. Scattered downpours and thunderstorms will likely develop in the flow and don’t be at all surprised if we see some pass through during the day on Sunday. It does not rain all day long. In fact most of the time it won’t be raining. This pattern for downpours will likely continue for all of next week so there is the chance for some rain every day. It will be warm and very humid with temperatures into the 80s each day.
