Tropical Storm Hermine NOT SANDY!
The inevitable comparisons are likely to begin as well as the stupid social media shit that will appear by some people generating click bait. Lets set a few things straight regarding this tropical storm. First off Sandy came in from off the ocean in an almost perfectly timed track with high tides. It was a hurricane that gradually made the transition to an extra tropical storm. Those are the meteorological semantics that could be discussed at another time.
Hermine will be approaching us as a tropical storm and it could very well be a strong tropical storm. In addition there are tidal concerns with a new moon early next week. Also the possibility of a storm meandering around for a few days doesn’t exactly help the situation. The bottom line is that we really don’t know what to expect at this point in terms of specifics. My own view is that if you do the common sense preparations to guard against power loss, coastal flooding, and other events you should be okay. This could wind up behaving like a bad winter nor’easter. A lot will depend on the final track.
You can see Hermine on the satellite loop organizing in the Gulf of Mexico. Top winds have increased to 50 mph as Hermine is moving north northeast. I don’t see anything to change the forecast view given all the models this afternoon. Everything so far seems to moving according to forecasts.
There are no weather problems expected on Long Island from this through the daytime Saturday. Based on what I see at the moment, I think Saturday we will see increasing clouds with a northeast to east wind and temperatures in the 70s. Then rain and wind move in late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Thats the early guess here. Given the slow movement, we could see on and rain and squalls with gusty winds continue through Labor Day.
Meanwhile tonight we have some showers on the radar to the north that are moving southward and we could see some downpours tonight into Thursday morning. Then it turns less humid and partly sunny Thursday afternoon with highs in the low 80s. A nice cool dry air mass builds in Thursday night and Friday should be mostly sunny with highs in the 70s.
