Wind Advisory Long Island Gusts 50 Mph Strong Cold Front Approaches
We have a strong cold front approaching Long Island as low pressure heads to the Saint Lawrence Valley and a strong southerly flow develops ahead of it on Thursday. Clouds are overhead and now we have both higher clouds as tropical moisture moves up from the south and the cool marine layer keeping us in light rain drizzle and patchy fog. Rain is coming up from the south and that will play through overnight and during the Thursday morning commute.
During Thursday afternoon as the cold front draws closer southerly winds will be picking up and by tomorrow evening we will be seeing winds of 20 to 30 mph. Gusts could reach 50 mph or higher as we approach midnight and the early morning hours of Friday when the cold front will be passing through.
As far as the rain is concerned we have two rounds of rain to deal with. The first is coming overnight into Friday morning and the satellite picture shows high clouds from the moisture to the south spreading in.
SATELLITE
REGIONAL RADAR
Regional radar shows a large area of rain to our southwest steadily advancing to the northeast. These rains will likely be here through the morning commute before moving to our north. Rain is increasing now on the local radar views across New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA
Once that rain plays through we should see a break in the action Thursday afternoon and then it will be time for the cold front to approach and move through. Temperatures will be warm Thursday with highs reaching the mid 60s to near 70 in some places. There might not be much happening through the evening commute but after that a line of heavy showers and thunderstorms will move in probably after 10 or 11 pm and lasting until about 2 or 3 am.
These thunderstorms likely will be severe as they move out of Pennsylvania and into New Jersey and they should weaken somewhat as the move over Long Island but that is not a guarantee at this point. Once the front passes weather conditions will improve on Friday with developing sunshine and a gusty northwest wind that should ease somewhat as the day wears on. Temperatures Friday will settle in the 50s during the mid to late afternoon and head down into the 30s at night. The weekend looks dry and chilly with some sunshine for Saturday and for Sunday. Low pressure will pass offshore Saturday night with little consequence here other than clouds. Highs Saturday and Sunday will be in the low to mid 50s with lows at night in the 30s to near 40.
