Wind Coastal Flooding The Biggest Issues Thursday Night Friday Long Island

Thursday night and Friday Long Island will be seeing wild weather conditions with a screaming south wind into Friday afternoon followed by a screaming west wind later in the afternoon and evening. That will set off 30 degree temperature drops in 5 or 6 hours. However coastal flooding I believe will be a big issues for the south shore of Nassau County as well as Southwest Suffolk County. Coastal flooding modelling tools suggest that we could see widespread moderate to even some pockets of major coastal flooding at the morning high tides. Expect coastal flood warnings to be posted for this event.

Rain develops Thursday afternoon and continues into Friday morning and Long Island could see 2 inch plus rainfalls from this storm system. A brief break follows one last line of showers around midday and then the winds shift from south to west. Winds will be gusting 50 to 60 mph in both directions. Once the wind shifts, temperatures plummet rapidly. Long Island will be in the 50s at 1pm and in the 20s at 7pm!
This is coming of course on one of the heaviest travel days of the year going into the Christmas holiday weekend. The remaining issue for Long Island will be whether we will see a flash freeze of all the standing moisture left from the rain of Thursday night and Friday morning and/or whether there is a very quick short burst of snow to whiten the ground and really make things icy. I’m leaning to the idea that Long Island doesn’t see the change to snow before it ends and that probably leaves a 3 hour wind where moisture can evaporate. Either way it will be very windy and brutally cold with Saturday morning lows in the mid teens. The weekend will be dry at least but it will be windy and cold Saturday. Highs will only be in the low 20s with sunshine and back down to the low teens Christmas morning. Sunday highs with sunshine will be in the low to mid 20s with a gusty wind but the winds should be off their peaks we will see Thursday night through Saturday morning.
