Frigid conditions across Long Island will be short-lived as temperatures moderate by midweek.
What a morning. Other than temperatures being in the single digits and wind chills below zero, we have also had both sound and ocean effect snow! Much like lake effect snow when cold, gutsy winds blow over the warmer waters of the Great Lakes, the same is occurring over the Long Island Sound and Atlantic Ocean. In fact, this rising air has been leading to winter waterspouts spinning up just off the South Fork!
*A WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM EST THIS EVENING*
Northwest winds will be sustained 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph into this evening. These strong winds may blow down limbs, trees, and power lines, leading to scattered power outages. It will also take continue to make it feel like it is below zero. Stay warm everyone!
Weather will remain dry through Tuesday with mainly sunny skies. Clouds will increase into Wednesday morning as the next system rolls through. It is likely to bring rain through Thursday as temperatures significantly rebound from the brutal start to the week. Tuesday will be cold but less harsh (20s-30) followed by 40s Wednesday and near 50 Thursday.
Behind that, we will once again have a colder period for Friday and the weekend. Some light snow is possible Sunday as a fairly week system moves through. -Geoff
