Backdoor Front Moving Southeastward
20 degree Temperature Drops
Early this afternoon much of Long Island was sitting in the 60s and 70s but the backdoor cold front has moved through and now has reached NYC & Northern New Jersey. Tempertures fell quickly into the 50s and as of 5pm 40s have now appeared in Eastern Long Island. The temperature drop will continue all night and we should bottom in the upper 30s and lower 40s by morning. On the satellite picture you can see a streak of clouds just offshore and moving westward. Low clouds drizzle and fog are on the eastern and southern horizon and they will be moving in overnight as well.
Though the radars are not showing much at the moment as the night wears on light rain is likely to develop and the radars will begin to get busy as the moisture comes in from the east. Have a sweater or a jacket with you tonight as it will be turning progressively colder overnight with an increased dampness.
Sunday by contrast will be a raw miserable day with low clouds drizzle or light rain and temperatures in the upper 30s and lower 40s all day. Then as this major storm in the midwest begins to move eastward, look for rain and heavy downpours to develop Sunday night into Monday afternoon and 2 inches or more of rain is possible along with a few thunderstorms. Temperatures Sunday night should start to rise through the 40s and we should be at least into the 50s on Monday. Some thunderstorms could come into the mix Monday before this all moves out later in the afternoon. Tuesday will be dry and chilly with clouds and some sun and highs just in the 50s.
