The wind on Long Island was cranking all night long from the south at 20 to 30 mph with higher gusts. This morning it has relaxed somewhat. Temperatures have warmed and we have some cloud cover to work through but we should be at least partly sunny before too long. Temperatures should reach the mid 60s to around 70 this afternoon. For many areas on Long Island this will be the warmest of the spring so far with temperatures in the mid to upper 70s from NYC westward.

TODAY’S FORECAST HIGH TEMPERATURES

South Wind Temps Rise Saturday Raw Damp Cold Sunday

Other than dealing with the cloud cover this moving through this morning there are no big weather issues to speak of into Saturday morning. It is what happens Saturday afternoon and when it happens that will be the key to the high temperatures on Saturday.

US SATELLITE

There are some showers showing up on the radar this  morning but it appears most of those showers are aloft and not much of the moisture is reaching the ground. This is all part of the transition to warmer air this afternoon.

Saturday’s issue is the backdoor front and we think that high temperatures over the Eastern part of Long Island will be achieved early in the day with readings close to 60 in the morning but by late in the afternoon it will be in the 40s over the east and by Sunday morning it will be in the upper 30s.

SATURDAY FORECAST HIGH TEMPERATURES

South Wind Temps Rise Saturday Raw Damp Cold Sunday

For West Suffolk & Nassau as the front slides southwestward the high temperatures will come around noon or shortly afterward in the 60s and then drop into and through the 50s later in the afternoon and also by Sunday morning it will be in the upper 30s and lower 40s. Along with the temperature drop will come low clouds fog drizzle and some light rain. Sunday looks to be rather miserable and raw with low clouds light rain and fog. Highs will just be in the upper 30s and lower 40s. Then as the the storm to the west begins to swing eastward, temperatures should start to rise Sunday night through the 40s. We will get into some heavier downpours of rain Sunday night into Monday as temperatures continue to rise. There could be some thunderstorms Monday afternoon as a cold front swings through and an inch or two of rain seems likely. The bottom line is enjoy the weekend as best you can. Saturday will be better than Sunday just from the standpoint of temperatures. Rain on Sunday won’t amount to much but that raw feel will make you want to stay indoors.
