Cold Abates Snow Late Monday Night Tuesday Should Not Amount to Much
This was definitely the coldest day of the winter season so far as temperatures didn’t get above freezing this afternoon in most places on Long Island after morning lows in the upper teens. The wind made it feel colder of course and while the wind is a little less busy now than it was earlier, it hasn’t completely dropped off. It should do so overnight. Some high clouds are around and the core of the cold air mass is past us. Lows should be in the lower 20s with perhaps a few teens in cold spots.

Snow showers are on the regional radar in parts of Pennsylvania south into Virginia thanks to a weakening upper trough. There are no echoes on the radar for us to worry about overnight.
Monday will be a day of increasing clouds with highs reaching a range of about 30 to 35. Low pressure is headed into the Ohio Valley as advertised and we saw nothing today that changes our minds regarding the outlook for the next 3 days.
The surge of moisture from the south will hit the block. The primary low will be moving into Northern Ohio. The secondary low forms well east of Virginia and takes all the moisture with it. Therefore nothing of consequence happens snow wise Monday evening or most of Monday night. By Tuesday morning the leftover primary low spreads some snow over long island and we should see snow Tuesday and perhaps into Tuesday night. The upper support is weak so it is very hard to justify an upside surprise so I will go along with the National Weather Service forecast for a coating to maybe an inch or possibly 2 in some places when this is all said and done.
North Shore will be favored over South Shore and less as you go east to the East End. During Tuesday night there could be some light precipitation around and temperatures will be 32 or below which might allow for some freezing rain or freezing drizzle to occur so bear this in mind. Weak systems tend to linger and this will probably will into Wednesday morning. After that a new and stronger storm will develop along coastal North Carolina but the block continues to suppress everything and this storm will move eastward rather than northward. We don’t expect snow from this storm as it moves to the east. Rather an upper air low will be dropping southeastward and that could create some snow showers early Thursday as the low starts to pull away offshore. Dry and windy conditions will be with us for later Thursday and Friday as the next high builds in.
