Heat Advisory Long Island 90s Today Mid to Upper 90s Sunday
A heat advisory is in effect for Long Island which basically means that it is hot and we are advising you of this ! Long Island does have the benefit of the natural air conditioning that is the cold ocean this of of year. Water temperatures are in the 60s. This usually means that once the temperatures get to a certain point, the difference between the temperature over the ocean and the land is large. Nature compensates for this by moving the air from the ocean to the land which is the sea breeze. The problem with this is that the difference in temperature between the land and the ocean is narrowing which makes the sea breeze more limiting in effect. Also a land west wind is strong enough to hold the sea breeze back. It should make it to about Sunrise Highway this afternoon but will probably not get much further north than that. This means inland highs especially north of the Long Island Expressway will reach 90 to 95 today while areas to the south might top at 90 or so before the south wind comes in and cools things down.
EASTERN SATELLITE LOOP
Sunday brings a different issue and that is a very limited sea breeze if any at all except at the beaches. The upper ridge will be sitting right on top of us. This will just trap us in an an atmospheric hothouse and Long Island high temperatures Sunday will reach the middle and possibly the upper 90s. Even areas to the east in Suffolk County over the East End could see temperatures reach 90 to 95 before any sea breeze action takes hold later in the day.
Monday may bring some relief to Long Island especially east of Riverhead where highs may only be in the 70s to near 80. A south wind could take hold and keep temperatures Monday in the much more reasonable 80s to near 90 degrees. No thunderstorms are forecast until Wednesday at the earliest when a few pop up thunderstorms are possible on the 4th of July but they should be widely scattered and it is quite possible that we don’t see any until Friday when a strong cold front approaches.
