Long Island Columbus Day Weekend Onshore Flow Issues Especially Sunday

Long Islanders know all too well how the wind off the ocean can create weather problems for Long Island. Fortunately for today we have enough dry air that the morning low clouds burned off relatively quickly and we are enjoying an afternoon of warm sunshine and temperatures in the 70s. The radars are nice and quiet. However the onshore flow will create issues for Long Island over the weekend.

During tonight the onshore flow strengthens and the winds turn more easterly. This brings another night of low clouds and patchy fog. Lows by morning will be in the lower 60s. Saturday however, the east to southeast flow brings in a stronger flow of moisture. This means that clouds will have a very difficult time burning off. Also the moist flow could bring in a few sprinkles or even some patchy drizzle especially right along the shore. Saturday highs will be just in the 60s.

Low pressure off the North Carolina coast won’t be heading up the coast but between it and the high offshore, we will see moisture being thrown back northwestward. The NAM model shows an area of rain coming into coastal New Jersey but I am going to be cautious here since the models may not have that exactly correct. There is the risk for a few showers Saturday night and again on Sunday though it does come in waves so we are not talking about an all day washout. However if we miss the showers, it will be a gloom and doom cloudy day with patchy light rain or drizzle Sunday with highs just in the 60s.

The onshore flow should relax slowly on Monday leaving us with lots of clouds at least for the start of the day but skies could try to brighten up in the afternoon. I don’t think we see showers on Monday unless there is some leftover drizzle early in the morning. Highs could nudge back above 70. The cold front to the west never gets here so we should see sunshine and warmer temperatures return Tuesday and last through at least Thursday.
