Long Island Gets Rain & Snow into Sunday,
Major Storm Brings Strong Winds Heavy Rain Tuesday into Wednesday
While we have areas to the north and northwest that are under Winter Weather Advisories & Winter Storm Warnings, Long Island is sitting just outside this zone. We do not expect any surprises from this storm system that is now spreading clouds and precipitation up the coast. There just isn’t enough cold air around to create snow issues and the bulk of the precipitation is going to be mostly rain. However we could see some snow in the mix late today and this evening as the first thumping of precipitation arrives. It is possible that areas in Nassau and Northwest Suffolk County could see some snow with this but it should go over to mostly rain, or sleet and rain before too long.

Look for coverage and intensity of preipcitation to increase as the day wears on. The first round will move in probably after 4pm and it should be mostly done by 1 or 2 am. Then what follows will depend on low pressure offshore and an upper trough to the west for Sunday. Some models suggest we could see a little snow on the back side as the atmosphere turns slightly colder. Overall my thinking is a coating to an inch or so is possible overall but this generally should not be an issue. Temperatures today and tonight will be in the 30s. Sunday we will likely be in the low to mid 30s.
Monday into the first part of Tuesday will be calm and quiet but we have a major storm that will be developing in the Southern Plains and then heading northeast to the Great Lakes. This is going to set Long Island up for heavy rains of up to 2 inches late Tuesday into early Wednesday along with the chance for a thunderstorm or two. Strong winds will develop and we see winds gusting past 50 mph likely Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The winds will be from the south southeast and this opens the door also for coastal flooding issues at high tides Tuesday night into early Wednesday, and that will depend on the timing of a wind shift to the west at some point early Wednesday. That wind shift will be important regarding the extent of any coastal flooding. Windy conditions continue Wednesday as weather slowly improves. Another storm system of a similar nature is possible over next weekend.
