Long Island Could See Some Snow Saturday Night into Sunday,

Major Storm Brings Rain & Wind Next Tuesday

It hasn’t been much of a winter so far but the pattern has changed enough so that Long Island may actually see some snow over the weekend. There is still quite a bit of uncertainty regarding this system. We have cold air in Eastern Canada that will drain southward Friday and Saturday but this puts Long Island on the edge of accumulating snow. Secondly we have a storm system that is not as well developed as was advertised by models back several days ago. This makes the forecast rather difficult regarding just exactly what is going to happen Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Right now we have no issues other than upper troughs that are going by in the northwest flow bringing clouds through from time to time. Otherwise we will have clouds overnight with lows in the upper 20s and lower 30s. Thursday looks to be dry with clouds and some sunshine with highs in the low 40s. Then as colder air starts to move southward from Eastern Canada, Friday looks to be sunny but cold with highs in the mid to upper 30s.

Clouds will increase during Saturday with highs in the mid to upper 30s. Then Saturday evening snow will develop or a mix of snow and rain and then we will have last overnight into Sunday morning. The above map is the probability for AT LEAST a few inches (2 or 3) and notice that the numbers are under 20 percent which is low. On the other hand I thought it prudent that if warm air from the ocean can be held off, a slushy inch or two is possible especially on the North Shore and north of the Long Island expressway. The storm offshore pulls away Sunday with leftover clouds and some light rain or snow around.

A quick mention for the long range next week as we have a major storm that is likely to develop in the Southern Plains and then head to the Great Lakes. Models have been on to this for a week now and it seems likely that we will be dealing with strong winds and heavy rains Tuesday night into Wednesday. We will be focusing more on this system once the weekend system has played itself out.
