Long Island Gets Slight Humidity Relief Today
Late Week Uncertainty Atlantic Low Forecast to Develop
A back door cold front has now parked itself across New Jersey and Pennsylvania and that has put Long Island into the land of humidity relief today though the relief is small. Dew points have dropped into the upper 50s and lower 60 and should hold there all day. The satellite pictures show clouds to the northwest but they should stay there for the most part leaving us with sunshine. The weak front won’t produce any thunderstorms here. The air mass over is is stable so enjoy the day. Highs will reach the upper 70s to near 80 with slightly cooler temperatures along the shore.

The humidity break is short lived and we will see that front back up northward overnight. This puts us back in the land of very warm temperatures and high humidity on Wednesday. The Storm Prediction Center is setting severe weather risk up for primarily Wednesday night so the dayside Wednesday will feature hazy sunshine and highs back to the low 80s inland with 70s at the beaches.
The front moves through late Wednesday night so there could be an overnight shower or thunderstorm when that happens. The front as so many have this summer, stalls overhead. This puts us at risk for showers and downpours on Thursday. Complicating the picture somewhat is the likelihood of low pressure developing off the Southeast US coast and what that does. Unknown here are whether the system becomes tropical. It seems that the upper flow and the position of the stationary front will keep any low offshore. We may still have to deal with some clouds and perhaps a few showers on Friday. Until we see where the low develops we won’t know exactly what kind of track it will take. The upper flow over the Eastern US and Western Atlantic is quite weak and it is possible that the low could linger offshore all weekend. That may not necessarily a negative thing weather wise. At the moment we will wait to see how this low evolves and go for a partly sunny weekend with winds off the ocean and temperatures in the 70s to near 80 but be advised that could change depending on what happens. The National Hurricane Center has a 60 percent chance that this system develops into a tropical cyclone as of their 8am forecast Tuesday.
