Long Island Highs in the 80s With Omega Block Pattern Over US

Blocking can be a bad set up for Long Island as it sets up an onshore flow bringing with it temperatures and cloud issues. Sometimes however the block is set up in a way where Long Island benefits and gets nice spring weather with very warm temperatures and this is where we are at for the next several days.

We have a strengthening storm to the northeast of Bermuda on one side and a strong storm coming in from the Pacific and dropping down the West Coast. To compensate for those deep troughs there has to be a counterweight and that is the strong ridge that develops in between. This not only heats up the Eastern US, but it keeps the wind flow from Long Island from the north or northwest and this time of year in this sort of set up it means warm temperatures, dry air, and minimal sea breeze issues.

SATELLITE

storm free

The satellite looks great today with mainly clear skies and it doesn’t appear that we have any upper troughs moving through today or for the next 2 days. Sunshine should take highs to the upper 70s and lower 80s this afternoon. The sea breeze should hold off until the middle or late afternoon except right on the beaches.

Wednesday brings another day of sunshine and very warm temperatures. We should reach the low and possibly middle 80s in many inland areas in Nassau County as well as the northern half of Suffolk County with upper 70s and lower 80s over the South Shore and over the East End.

Thursday will be day 3 of the nice warm weather with sunshine most of the day. Highs Thursday will be in the low to mid 70s over the East End and upper 70s and lower 80s over much of Suffolk County and low to middle 80s in Northern Nassau and Northwest Suffolk County.

LONG RANGE OUTLOOK FRIDAY THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK

The character of our weather with change a bit on Friday as the upper ridge begins a slow migration westward and that puts us at risk of upper air troughs coming down from the north. Friday should be partly sunny with highs on Long Island mostly in the mid to upper 70s though cooler east and south. Look for the chance for a shower or thunderstorm on Friday though dew points will still remain reasonable.

There weekend brings some complications. The Omega block retrogrades west as the upper high moves into the Middle Mississippi Valley. This puts us in an increasing northwest flow aloft and upper troughs will be dropping southward. One such trough could trigger off scattered showers or thunderstorms Saturday in between cloudy to partly sunny conditions. It will start to turn a little more humid over the weekend as dew points rise.

Sunday sees a cold front approaching and ahead of it we should be partly sunny with highs into the 80s. There is the chance for a shower or a thunderstorm when the front passes. Next week we lose the big ridge and the omega block but temperatures should still remain above average with highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s for Monday. Next week’s pattern is going to be a bit different than this week as weather systems will be moving along and that means weather fronts coming through We could be back into the 80s into midweek before another cold front passes through.
