Long Island Will See 80s Mid Week Minimal Sea Breeze Impacts
The cold ocean continues have an impact on Long Island weather especially when it comes to temperatures. However it is now mid May and not mid April. Ocean water temperatures have warmed about 10 degrees to the middle 50s. The sea breeze impact is still there but it is less than it was a month ago. Under the right circumstances we can warm up here and this week brings those circumstances.
An upper ridge will be building strongly this week in the east and most importantly it is doing it west of the coastal plain. This creates a northwest flow of dry and increasingly warmer air as it downslopes from the northwest, dries out, and heats up. Today on Long Island it is another day that starts with sun and then we see it mix with some patchy clouds. We missed out on most of the scattered showers and thunderstorms that popped up inland over the last 3 days and we should miss it again today. Highs should reach the low to mid 70s with temperatures just a little cooler this afternoon along the South Shore. Overall it is a good day.
SATELLITE
Warmer temperatures begin Tuesday and the warmest temperatures will be Wednesday and Thursday. We will also have plenty of sunshine Tuesday. Temperatures will top out near 80 degrees in most of Nassau and Northwest Suffolk County but even areas closer to the south shore should reach mid to upper 70s before the sea breeze tries to come in during the afternoon.
Wednesday will be the first day where Long Island could see widespread highs reaching into the 80s. I’m thinking across Nassau and Northwest Suffolk County we could see temperatures reach the mid 80s and higher than forecast by models. Even areas along the South Shore and East End could see readings close to 80 or at least mid to upper 70s before any sea breeze takes hold. It should also be another day of plenty of sunshine.
Thursday is another day of sunshine but there might be a bit more of a sea breeze issue here. Temperatures however will still manage to find their way up to the mid 70s and lower 80s in most places away from the coast.
LONG RANGE OUTLOOK FRIDAY INTO NEXT WEEK
Starting Friday the strong upper ridge will begin a slow migration westward (and we do mean slow). As a result this will allow weak dying fronts to move southeast from Canada beginning Thursday night where there is the chance for a shower or thunderstorm. Friday will be very warm again with some sunshine and highs in the mid to upper 80s. There is the chance for scattered or thunderstorms Friday night as another weak front approaches. The humidity will still be reasonable with dew points in the 50s.
The very warm weather continues over the weekend with highs both Saturday and Sunday in the 80s. Right now we are thinking that Saturday will be partly sunny with the chance for a shower or thunderstorm. Sunday probably brings the best chance for widespread thunderstorms late in the day as a stronger cold front drops down from Eastern Canada.
We will likely see a short break from the much above normal temperatures early next week as high pressure builds in from the north but the air with this high won’t be all that cool. It will just take highs back into the 70s to near 80. No widespread rain is forecast here overall (other than the shower thunderstorm threats) over the next 10 days.
