Long Island Noreaster Coastal Flooding Forecast

Long Island Noreaster Coastal Flooding Forecast This system is getting more and more complicated as weather models this afternoon are starting to come around to the idea of cold air working down to the surface thanks to very powerful dynamics and changing the rain over to snow even on Long Island. This right now is the least of our concerns as we want to focus front and center on coastal flooding at high tides Friday and Saturday. We have a noreaster and we have a full moon. This is troublesome from a tidal standpoint. It would seem that moderate coastal flooding is a good bet here but it will depend on the track of this storm. This storm will be doing some unusual things as a block to the north forces the storm to eventually drop southward and then southeastward. This will create a long duration tidal event that could last into the weekend.

Based on the track of the GFS model earlier today with a low going into Southeastern New England, tidal surges were actually higher during the Saturday morning high tide rather than the Friday tides. However other models have a track further south which would increase tidal issues for Friday as well. For now we are forecasting moderate coastal flooding at high tide but be advised that this may change going forward.

There are no weather issues tonight over Long Island. We have nice clear skies and a very quiet radar at the moment and it should remain so through Wednesday. Temperatures tonight will bottom in the relatively comfortable 30s. Wednesday we will have sunshine and arriving clouds with highs reaching into the 50s. An ocean wind will develop in the afternoon and lower temperatures a bit. Weather conditions overall will deteriorate Thursday with rain developing late in the day. Rain will continue into Friday with an increase wind. Gale force winds are forecast along the coast Friday into Saturday with 40 to 50 mph gusts. Rainfalls of up to a couple of inches. And yes there is a chance we could see a change to wet snow Friday afternoon.
