Long Island Nor’easter Heavy Rain Should Slowly Taper Off

Winds Pick Up Into Tonight

Heavy rains have been the story so far across Long Island with some torrential downpours. Flash Flood Watch continues through this afternoon and evening. Even though we will see the heaviest rain start to slowly taper off (I mean slowly) we will still see moderate to occasionally heavy rain continue this afternoon into tonight and then gradually taper off further after that. Islip has received over 2 inches of rain as of 10am. Most rainfall amounts on Long Island total 2 to 3 inches so far and we certainly could pick up another inch or two over the remainder of this storm. High Wind Warnings are in effect for the South Fork on the East End as winds will pick up island wide as we move through the afternoon and into tonight. The strongest winds will be late this afternoon into the early morning hours Wednesday. While winds will gust over 50 mph over the East End especially the south fork, elsewhere we will see gales especially along the coast. Winds should be a little lower away from the ocean with some gusts of 30 to 40 mph. Winds will be less as you head into Western Nassau county.

Coastal flood advisories are up with tides expected to be 1 foot or so above normal. This will cause minor coastal flooding. Fortunately we are the low point of the tide cycle as we are half way between the full and the new moon.

While the back edge of the rain likes just to our south at midday, the coastal storm which is far offshore will begin a counterclockwise loop taking the low back westward. This will cause the current rain shield to stop moving north and begin pivoting back southwestward. So while the rain could lighten or even stop for a short time it will start up again. It will at least not be quite as heavy as it was this morning.

The NAM model loop starts at 11am and ends at 8am Wednesday. Notice that there is a band of heavy rain that moves through during the overnight but it won’t last too long. By morning the low is dropping southward and the rain is mostly done though there will be lots of leftover clouds around. Improvement will be very slow as the low level moisture will be stubborn and the low takes its time getting out of the way. Temperatures are into the 60s right now but as winds go northeast and more northerly, look for temperatures to drop into the 50s making it feeling rather raw. Thursday will be dry but there will still be clouds as the onshore flow continues. Another storm system will bring more rain on Friday but it will be less than what we are experiencing today.
