Long Island Seeing Clouds Showers Heavier Downpours into Thursday

The dry air of the last several days is now to the east and we are sitting on a boundary zone between that dry cool air to the east and very warm to hot air from Central Pennsylvania west. That boundary is a developing warm front and Long Island lies to the east of that front dealing with clouds and moisture moving southward from Eastern Canada. It is a bit of an odd set up aloft but it happens when you have northerly winds in the upper atmosphere and the upper features are not moving very much.

The satellite shows the north to south band of clouds and we are seeing some showers on the radar. However at least so far much of the rain is on the light side and in some cases having a tough time even reaching the ground. The low humidity of the last few days is making the atmosphere tough to saturate but look for on and off light rain but it will probably ease this evening. Temperatures are in the low to mid 70s and should hold there for the rest of the day.

The boundary won’t be moving much until Wednesday night into Thursday when the warm front goes by and the cold front follows. Look for clouds and maybe a shower or two overnight into Wednesday morning. Later Wednesday into Thursday at some point, more numerous showers and heavy downpours will develop around Long island. How much gets in remains to be seen but we should see some rain out of this. Temperatures will be in the 60s tonight and in the 70s Wednesday. There should be some dry periods in the mix. Rainfall amounts should reach about an inch or so however if heavier downpours develop and settle overhead, amounts could be higher.

The rain should come to an end during Thursday as the front moves offshore with leftover clouds and highs in the 70s. Then we head on to Friday and the weekend which right now looks good to me with some sunshine each day and highs reaching into the 80s. The next cold front won’t arrive until Monday when we will see showers and thunderstorms and this front could be a severe weather risk as another strong upper trough moves into the Northeast.
