Long Island Starts To Warm Slightly This Weekend

Before Gloomy Weather Sets In Next Week

We finished off the day on Long Island with what I would describe as ineffective sunshine. The day had a November feel to it with gusty winds and temperatures that struggled all day. Temperatures managed to only make it back to the middle to upper 50s. In early November that is average. For late April we were a good 5 to 7 degrees below average. Let’s not even talk about the 25 to 35 mph wind gusts that made it feel like it was in the 40s. We head into tonight with the wind continuing which is actually a good thing. That will keep temperatures in the mid to upper 30s with no frost or freeze issues. Skies should be mostly clear all night as the satellite shows us clear everywhere.

Friday begins an uptrend in temperatures that will eventually get us back to average for this time of year. Friday will be nice and sunny. Highs will reach the lower 60s in most places. The wind will continue to be an issue into the afternoon but it should begin to ease later in the day. Saturday we high pressure builds in from the north down the coast and that puts us in sunshine with highs reaching 60 to 65. Sunday will be no worse than partly sunny with highs in the middle 60s except near south and east facing shorelines where the sea breeze will likely take hold.

Next week the story is going to be different. We have the blocking low to the east moving further east near Newfoundland where it will park itself for awhile. 3 weather systems will be moving across the US. The first one will bring clouds and some showers Monday though it doesn’t look like it amounts to much. The second will come Tuesday night and Wednesday. This is mostly a cold front with a few showers. However it sets up a third and stronger low for the end of the week. This one will have more moisture with it and will track from the Ohio Valley to off the Middle Atlantic coast. That means northeast winds and a gloom and doom scenario with clouds and rain arriving Thursday night and lasting through Friday. Temperatures the first part of the week will be close to average but if that late week system verifies as advertised we will be sitting in rain and temperatures in the very raw chilly 40s. This will leave us with a chilly but mostly dry Mother’s Day weekend. There is a chance this could get suppressed to our south if the blocking lows offshore become to strong and dominant. That is something we will have to watch for in the coming days.
