Long Island Watch For Another Round of Showers Thunderstorms Tonight

Very Warm Weather Weekend

A warm front is trying to move across Long Island but it is having a difficult time. This may be good news from the standpoint of severe weather. Daytime heating is underway in areas to the south in New Jersey and Southeast Pennsylvania. Dew points there have risen into the upper 60s making for a very moist air mass. Breaks are showing up in the cloud cover there. But on Long Island the winds at midday are still from the southeast and that cool ocean wind will keep the atmosphere cooler and more stable here. This is the reason why Long Island is not under a risk for severe weather per SPC but areas from NYC west and south are.

We will be watching to see if wind turn more southwest this afternoon and evening which could warm things up a bit. Temperatures will likely hold in the 60s all day. This evening we will watch a line of strong thunderstorms approach. They should reach their peak intensity between 5 and 7pm and then weaken somewhat (as they normally do) once they pay the outrageous bridge tolls and head into Long Island.

Even though the cold front passes offshore tonight we still have some house cleaning to do Friday. Look for clouds and some sun with highs reaching into the 70s. There will be some scattered thunderstorms possible in the afternoon but there is no severe weather risk indicated.

Saturday we will see sunshine and the beginning of a warming trend that will lead to very warm and humid conditions as we move into next week. Sunshine should take highs into the 80s inland with cooler 70s South Shore with 60s East End and at the South Shore beaches. Sunday will be warmer with sunshine as highs will reach the 80s everywhere and we could see temperatures in the upper 80s in Northern Nassau and Northwest Suffolk County. It will be somewhat humid but not overly so over the weekend but next week the dew points rise with the temperatures and it will be uncomfortable through Wednesday. Little if any rain is forecast until late Wednesday at the earliest as a cold front drops southward from upstate NY.
