Thunderstorms Heading For Long Island This Evening
Heat Humidity Weekend & Next Week
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for Nassau County west into NYC and points west until 8pm. Usually this is the point where we say that thunderstorms heading for Long Island will fall apart before they get there and most times that is true. This is one of those times where it won’t be. The radars are showing strong to possibly severe thunderstorms coming out of Pennsylvania and moving across Northern and Central New Jersey.
The storms are also showing up well on the visible satellite picture. Clouds to east are from yesterday’s cold front that didn’t produce much. The wind direction is the most important difference as it is more from the west and not from the south. This allows for no cooling marine influence to stabilize the atmosphere.
We are using the new FV3 short range model which did a good job with the thunderstorms yesterday. The map above shows the storms moving into Nassau County between 4 and 5 pm and exiting the East End around 7pm. Look for strong gusty winds and heavy rains as the storms move through, just in time for the heart of the evening drive. Afterwards we should clear out overnight with lows in the lower 60s.
SATELLITE
On to the weekend which will certainly be one for the beaches. We are looking at sunshine very warm and moderately humid conditions. Highs will be in the 80s for most of Long Island reaching the higher end of the 80s north of the Long Island Expressway and the lower end as you head south of Sunrise. The same forecast holds for Sunday with inland highs close to 90 degrees. Sea breezes both days will be confined to shore locations and perhaps moving just inland. It will be a little cooler over the East End with highs in the 70s. Saturday and into the 80s inland Sunday. Humidity and heat will be with is into Wednesday of next week with highs in the 80s to around 90 each day. Other than an isolated shower or thunderstorm no rain is forecast until late Wednesday when a cold front moves through.
