Long Island Winter Storm Warning Coastal Flooding
Long Island Winter Storm Warning Coastal Flooding
Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for the rest of today and tonight as our coastal storm or as we are calling it the #foureaster is now underway. The bulk of the heavy snow for Long Island will be developing during this afternoon and then fall heavy overnight. Long Island could be in the jackpot zone here as the coastal storm takes over. You can certainly see on the satellite picture this morning the well developed signature as well as expanding activity on the radar.
US SATELLITE
Much of the activity is backing in from the southeast and there may be some sleet mixing in at times into this afternoon. The time of year means that unless it is snowing hard (at least an inch an hour rate) road surfaces should be more wet than white but once we get past about 3:30-4pm the sun angle is no longer in play and snow will start to stick everywhere. Temperatures will settle to near or just under 32. The heaviest snow falls overnight and some models till have a band of snow over Long Island at daybreak on Thursday.
My snow accumulations are lower than what the National Weather Service is forecasting. At this point I think we get at least what I am predicting with the possibility that it could go higher. Trying to figure out the upside here is no easy task but you get the idea. If we go higher than my forecast don’t be surprised.
Coastal flooding will continue to be an issue into tonight as winds are from the northeast today into tonight but they will back to north and northwest on Thursday so the coastal flooding issues will diminish after today. Some gusts along the coast could reach 40 to 50 mph for a time later this afternoon into tonight. Weather conditions improve on Thursday and hopefully this is the last noreaster we have to deal with for awhile.
