Long Island Winter Weather Advisory

Northern Nassau Northwest Suffolk County Tonight Friday Morning

Winter Weather Advisories are up for Northern Nassau and Northwest Suffolk County for tonight and Friday morning. The main issue will be a period of snow and a longer periods of sleet that goes to freezing rain Friday morning and then rain. The risk for some ice accretion will be along the north shore north of the Long Island Expressway. Ice accretion will be on the order of up to a tenth of an inch. South of the LIE ice accretion should diminish as you get closer to the shore.

As for snow there could be a burst of snow that leaves a coating to an inch or at most two with less south of the LIE and more to the north. Sleet could actually be the more dominant precipitation type overnight into early Friday. Snow forecasts reflect a snow/sleet combination.

There is some precipitation running out ahead of the main area which is for overnight. Most of what is on the radar is either light or not recaching the ground. Steadier precipitation is to the south. Still it is not impossible that we could see some snowflakes or even rain drops running around today. Then tonight between 10pm and 1am sleet and snow will develop and last for about 4 to 6 hours. Between 4 and 7am we will see sleet go over to rain on the south shore and freezing rain on the north shore.

During Friday morning precipitation will go to rain though some areas on the north shore will see freezing rain persist. Temperatures will be hovering near the freezing mark tonight and in the low to mid 30s on Friday. Weather conditions will improve Friday afternoon. The weekend looks okay. Saturday will be dry and cold with some sunshine and highs in the low to mid 30s. Sunday we have a cold front approaching from the north. Look for sun and arriving clouds with highs into the 40s. The front will bring in another shot of cold air and we could see it come through with some snow showers or even a snow squall Sunday evening. Next week starts dry and cold.
