Long Island’s First 80 Degree Highs Wednesday Thursday Friday

Everyone on Long Island knows that spring is always a tough time of year being surrounded by the cold waters of Long Island Sound to the north and especially the Atlantic Ocean to the south. For temperatures to reach 80 degrees you need a wind with a minimal ocean component. It appears that later this week we will have enough of a west wind (land component) for temperatures to make their first run to 80 degrees. The immediate South Shore (south of Sunrise Highway) might not make it, nor will the East End, however inland areas especially north of the Long Island Expressway should successfully reach the 80 degree mark on Wednesday and Thursday (assuming plenty of sunshine) and possibly Friday.

THURSDAY FORECAST HIGH TEMPERATURES

Thursday has the chance of being the warmest of the three day stretch with widespread 80s forecast even down to the South Shore areas south of Sunrise highway before any sea breeze comes inland. East End temperatures should make into the 70s again assuming plenty of sunshine.

We continue see low pressure rotating counter clockwise over upstate NY which is leaving the cloud signature on the satellite picture above and the rotating radar echos on the regional radar below. The air is very cold aloft and temperatures in upstate NY are cold enough for some snow shower activity. The spoke of moisture to the northwest is moving southeastward and we could see some rain showers later tonight into Monday before the upper low begins to pull away to the east. This will keep clouds around through Monday and subdued temperatures in the 50s by day and in the upper 30s and lower 40s by Monday morning.

Once the upper low pulls out Monday night warm dry air from the west moves in on  Tuesday with sunshine and temperatures reaching into the 70s. Then it turns very warm Wednesday and Thursday with highs reaching 80 Wednesday in some places and more widespread 80s on Thursday. We might be able to extend this into Friday but that depends on the next cold front and when it passes through.

Once the front passes, we will see dry air return next weekend along with near average temperatures. We don’t see any big storms on the horizon nor do we see prolonged periods of cloud cover so we could enjoy at least half way decent weather for awhile.
