Major Storm Sunday What To Expect For Long Island
With regards to the major storm Sunday moving up the East Coast and what to expect we will first get you there by discussing tonight into Saturday night first. There are no weather issues for tonight and for the day side Saturday. The satellite loop tonight shows clear skies up and down the Northeast & Middle Atlantic States. Most lows tonight will range from 50 to 55 though there could be some 40s in the Pine Barrens. The cold front to the west won’t impact us on Saturday so look for sunshine and some arriving clouds with highs in the mid to upper 60s. That is the easy part of the forecast.
Weather conditions will begin to deteriorate early Sunday morning with some rain coming in with the cold front to the west. Then we will look south to low pressure developing off the South Carolina coast. We also will be watching what impact a potential tropical storm has as it moves out of the Northwest Caribbean and heads to the Southeast coast as well. It is likely to absorbed by the non tropical system and become a major storm as it moves northward. We will see some rain Sunday afternoon into Sunday night with increasing southerly winds of 30 to 40 mph at times late in the day and Sunday evening. Rain will continue into the first part of Sunday night. Rainfall amounts could reach a couple of inches.

Once the storm tracks to the north of us Sunday night winds will shift to the northwest and the rain will end. Sunday night into Monday winds from the west northwest will be strong and gusty on the order of 25 to 35 mph with some gusts to 50 mph possible. Sky conditions will improve on Monday with temperatures in the 50s.
As far as tides are concerned I don’t expect them to be too problematic as long as everything behaves itself. We are in the first quarter on the moon phase which puts us in the lower part of the tide cycle. Since the storm is moving so quickly there will probably be only one high tide that is problematic.
One last note is the unknown impact of the tropical system as it moves up the coast. Sometimes when they get absorbed into non tropical systems they give the non tropical system some extra juice to work with. This could mean more rain and stronger winds and it is a possibility we have to consider.
