Miserable Spring Arrives Rain Thursday Wind Late Friday Saturday
Winter ends and spring arrives on Thursday and we all know how miserable spring can be on Long Island. Today at least we enjoyed lots of sunshine for most of the day but as soon as temperatures rose into the 50s, the south wind kicked in and temperatures dropped back down into the 40s and along the south shore we are talking low 40s. Get used to it until at least June and until the water temperatures which are near 40 now, warm up into the 60s.
EASTERN SATELLITE
High clouds are beginning to move in this evening and they will gradually increase and thicken up tonight. Rain is showing up on the regional radar to the south but it won’t get anywhere close until tomorrow morning when some lead bands of rain begin to arrive. Temperatures overnight will settle in the upper 30s and lower 40s.
REGIONAL RADAR
Low pressure moves up the coast on Thursday to our west. This will keep the heaviest rain to our west however we should still manage to get an inch to an inch and a quarter of rain. Bands of rain in the morning will give way to a more continuous rain late Thursday into Thursday night. The wind will not be a factor here until late Friday long after the coastal low is in Northern New England. The rain should end during the early morning hours on Friday.
Friday will be a transition day as we wait for another upper air disturbance to move through late Friday afternoon and evening. Friday will be a day of clouds and some breaks of sun with some showers in the late afternoon and evening. Temperatures will be in the 50s. Then the wind will crank up from the northwest and increase to 20 to 30 mph with gusts over 40 mph Friday night and on Saturday. Saturday we should see more sunshine, fewer clouds with highs in the low to mid 50s. The winds start to ease Saturday night and turn to the west on Sunday. This keeps the sea breeze out and we should warm up into the upper 50s and lower 60s.
Monday brings a cold front to us with some showers developing later Monday afternoon. A cold high from Canada will be pushing east and there will be a wave of some sort on this front. Temperatures Monday will be in the 50s to near 60 before the front passes and then drop rather rapidly behind it. We could see the rain change over to some snow before it ends early Tuesday morning but this should produce any accumulation. It will be just a typical early spring reminder that winter events can still occur. Then it is on to improvement on Tuesday with some sun returning. High temperatures however will probably have a tough time getting out of the 30s.
