Quiet Weather Week Ahead For Long Island As March Arrives Silently

March has a well deserved reputation for being a volatile month. Not only is it one of the windier months of the year but it is also the season where we begin to deal with what I refer to as the “curse of the onshore flow” Ocean winds over a warming land mass leads to days of doom and gloom. March has also a history of producing big ocean storms that have brought Long Island wind, heavy rain and sometimes heavy snow. We have none of those things on the horizon as the weather pattern is benign all week long with no major issues.

Today brings lots of sunshine as the satellite shows us under clear skies and other than a few passing clouds there are no issues to speak of other than the fact that it is cold. Highs today will be in the low to mid 30s. Radars across the Northeast and Mid Atlantic states are taking a break and for the most part this week, they will be on the silent side.

The overall theme this week will be temperatures bouncing around a bit but not going to any extreme in either direction. We will be a little bit above average on some days and near or a little bit below average on others. Tuesday with a cold front approaching we will warm up nicely  with sunshine giving way to some afternoon clouds. Highs should reach 40s away from the coast as local sea breezes develop. That will keep temperatures lower on the south shore and end end during the afternoon.

A weak cold front will arrive Tuesday night. The Atlantic is cut off from moisture and so is the Gulf of Mexico so the front will pass with a minimal amount of showers Tuesday night. There might be a passing shower overnight as the front goes by but after that another shot of dry and seasonally cold air come in for Wednesday.

Wednesday we should see some sunshine with highs in the 40s again. There is another cold front that comes through Wednesday night with a slightly colder shot of air for Thursday and Friday. That front comes through dry so Thursday and Friday look good with sunshine with highs just into the 40s both days and nighttime lows in the 20s. A dry week probably means a not so dry weekend and the next weather system will bring clouds over the weekend and some rain at some point. We will work that out in our longer range outlook later today.
