Rain Into The Weekend Making Long Island Weather Gloomy
If you are looking for a nice string of sunny days, you will probably have to wait awhile. The weather pattern is just not conducive to anything resembling nice weather. We can see the outcome of the onshore flow in mid May. It has been raining pretty much all day long on Long Island and it continues through the evening commute. The satellite picture shows the results of a trough in the Central Gulf States south into the Gulf of Mexico and a big upper high off the east coast. This is creating a southerly flow from the Northwest Caribbean northward to us with lots of clouds and areas of rain.

One positive outcome from all of this is that at least with an onshore flow, there are no worries as far as severe weather is concerned. A large area of rain is playing through this evening and we will get a break for a little while tonight. However there is more rain to the southwest that will come in during the overnight into Thursday morning.
Weather conditions could improve Thursday afternoon after the rain moves out in the morning. If we can manage a few breaks of sun we could see temperatures run up to 70 or so. The onshore flow however looms for Thursday night into early Saturday so it is back into the clouds for Friday and temperatures in the 50s. More rain is likely later Friday into Saturday morning.
Rainfall at least through Friday evening could amount to another inch to an inch an a half. At some point the ground will become saturated so we may have to look at the possibility of some flooding issues Friday night into Saturday morning.
Whether weather conditions improve somewhat over the weekend remains to be seen. The onshore flow may still have a grip over Long Island on Saturday keeping us in clouds and at least some rain or drizzle. We might see the onshore flow relax so that it turns warm and humid on Sunday but with that could come the chance for late showers or a thunderstorm. The wet weather pattern is likely to continue into next week.
