Rain Mostly South Winds Mostly Offshore
Rain Mostly South Winds Mostly Offshore
The coastal low that is developing this evening down in Virginia is going to do Long Island a big favor and move east rather than northeast or north. Heavy rains will move up as far north as Central New Jersey and extend east to just south of the south shore. For Long Island it looks like will be grazed by some rain overnight and into Saturday morning. Rainfall amounts should be on the light side and it will certainly not be enough to cause any issues. This is a change from just yesterday where low pressure was still being shown to move northward. This brings us back to our original idea for the weekend where Saturday would features showers and then lots of leftover clouds and that Sunday will be a nice day with plenty of sunshine, a nice northeast wind, and temperatures in the 70s.
Meanwhile this afternoon a sea breeze front has set up east west between the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway. This has produced a few downpours but they should diminish as we head into the evening hours. There are not weather issues for the first part of tonight. After midnight rain from New Jersey will move north and then swing eastward and that should put Long Island on the edge of some rain overnight into tomorrow morning. The northern edge of this rain will be very close so if it turns out that the rain stays south and we don’t see a drop, don’t be surprised.
Saturday the onshore flow will keep us in clouds all day and temperatures in the 70s. Skies should clear late Saturday or Saturday night and Sunday looks mostly sunny with highs in the upper 70s to near 80.
For the coastal waters it could get rather windy offshore with gusts to gale force especially out 20 miles or further. Also rain will be offshore for most of the day so those of you adventuring out into the coastal waters should pay attention to weather conditions before heading offshore. That northeast wind will create rough seas through the weekend.
