Rain Windy Late Tuesday Snow Ice Rain Thursday Night Into Friday Morning

Long Island enjoyed a nice day of sunshine. High reached into the 50s in Northern Nassau and Northwest Suffolk while elsewhere closer to the south shore and over the east end in didn’t get out of the 40s. So begins the season of “the curse of the onshore flow.” Now we turn our attention to our west and south as moisture heads our way. Skies are clear this evening but clouds will be rolling in later tonight. Temperatures probably won’t drop much with lows in the upper 30s and lower 40s. Radars are quiet right now but look for them to get busier on Tuesday.

Tuesday we will have lots of clouds with highs reaching the low to mid 50s though it will be cooler again south shore and east end. Low pressure moving into Southeastern Canada and its trailing cold front will approach and rain will move in during the afternoon. This will be followed by a break during the evening. Then the cold front arrives with showers and a few heavier downpours. Winds will pick up to 20 to 30 mph with some higher gusts and we might see wind advisories go up for gusty south to southwest winds to 40 mph.

This system moves along leaving us in leftover warm air. We will see decreasing clouds with perhaps some breaks of sunshine until a second front finally passes during the afternoon, probably with no rain to speak of. Highs will be in the mid 50s east to lower 60s west. Clouds in the east will linger longer.

Thursday starts the ball rolling with the next weather system as they roll down the bowling alley. Thursday morning we will see temperatures in the mid to upper 20s. Clouds will increase quickly and the next low will come in from the southwest. Some snow and sleet will probably develop late in the day though it will tend to be intermittent. Highs will be in the middle 30s.

During Thursday night we will see sleet/snow that will probably change to all snow for awhile. The low will try to redevelop to the east off the Delaware coast but it will probably not do it fast enough to prevent an eventual change to rain. However there may be enough time to put down up to a few inches of snow/sleet. The Weather Prediction Center is forecasting a 30 to 50% chance on the North Shore and 10 to 30% on the south shore. Precipitation will end Friday morning with leftover clouds and highs in the 30s. We will have to wait to see if we see a colder look develops and that could prolong snow and sleet. We probably won’t know that until Wednesday or Thursday. While the weather improves Friday into Saturday the active pattern isn’t done yet. another low will be heading up the coast just offshore on Sunday so there is the chance for some snow Sunday afternoon into Sunday night.
