Rip Current Risk Continues Tonight Saturday
Rip Current Risk Continues Tonight Saturday
With the warm humid air covering Long Island it is being fed by a strong south to southwest wind. This began yesterday and continues today creating strong rip current conditions all along the South Shore or Long Island. That condition continues into this evening and through the day Saturday. Rip currents should relax a bit on Sunday as the south southwest wind shifts to a more westerly wind.
…HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING…
* LOCATIONS…ATLANTIC OCEAN BEACHES.
* RIP CURRENT RISK…HIGH.
* SURF HEIGHT…4 TO 5 FT.
* TIMING…THROUGH THIS EVENING.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
RIP CURRENTS ARE POWERFUL CHANNELS OF WATER FLOWING QUICKLY AWAY
FROM SHORE…WHICH OCCUR MOST OFTEN AT LOW SPOTS OR BREAKS IN
SANDBARS AND NEAR STRUCTURES SUCH AS GROINS…JETTIES…AND
PIERS. TALK TO LIFEGUARDS AND BEACH OFFICIALS TO LEARN ABOUT ANY
SURF HAZARDS AND HEED THEIR ADVICE. PAY ATTENTION TO FLAGS AND
POSTED SIGNS AND SWIM IN LIFE GUARDED AREAS.
SWIM NEAR A LIFEGUARD. IF CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT…RELAX AND
FLOAT…AND DO NOT SWIM AGAINST THE CURRENT. IF ABLE…SWIM IN A
DIRECTION FOLLOWING THE SHORELINE. IF UNABLE TO ESCAPE…FACE THE
SHORE AND CALL OR WAVE FOR HELP.
The other issue this evening into tonight will be the threat for a scattered thunderstorm. For the moment radars are active north and west of Long Island. Some scattered thunderstorms could develop this evening so keep an eye to the sky for any threatening weather conditions. Saturday will be another warm and humid day with a south to southwest wind and a better chance of thunderstorms later in the day Saturday into Saturday night with most highs in the mid 70s to lower 80s. Sunday will be very warm with sunshine and slightly lower humidity with highs in the mid to upper 80s. Monday and Tuesday look good with sunshine and highs into the 80s. Tuesday Independence day looks especially good with sunshine and low humidity with highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s. Skies will be nice and clear Tuesday night for any fireworks action.
