Shower Thunderstorm This Evening Onshore Flow Begins Wednesday
A cold front is approaching Long Island from the northwest. We have been dealing with one patch of clouds that has been sitting overhead. What is left of it is sitting over Suffolk County as of 2pm. Sunshine is breaking through the clouds elsewhere. The front is weak but there is enough instability in the atmosphere to set off a couple of showers or a thunderstorm during the evening. It should move through relatively quickly. Time wise it will likely occur between 6pm and 10pm. After that the front moves to the south and skies should clear out late tonight.
EASTERN SATELLITE
REGIONAL RADAR
The main line of rain to the north is going to stay up north. On the local radar watch for a second weaker line to form in the next few hours across the Poconos and Catskills and move southeastward.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
Wednesday we see a return to winds coming in from off the ocean however the cloud line should push to the south of us and we will enjoy partly sunny skies with a northeast to east wind. This puts a lid on temperatures but we should reach into the 60s except 50s along the shore. Wednesday night and Thursday the onshore strengthens and we have another warm front coming up from the south. This means we get loaded up with clouds Wednesday night. Thursday will be another one of those cloudy raw days with an ocean wind and temperature in the 50s everywhere. Other than some patchy light rain or drizzle which is possible there won’t be a steady rain to worry about.
Friday the warm front struggles through and the cold front follows. This should take us into the 60s with the chance for showers when the front passes but I’m not expecting a lot of rain from this nor will it be continuous. Saturday looks nice with some sunshine and highs in the 60s. Sunday is Mother’s Day and I think if everything works out we will see sun early giving way to arriving clouds. Rain will likely hold off until late in the day or perhaps even until after sunset. Highs will be in the 60s. Then it is back to gloomy conditions with a wind off the ocean. On and off rain is likely Sunday night and most of Monday.
